Former Real Madrid star Gareth Bale has backed new boss Xabi Alonso to make big changes to the club and not be afraid to offload players if they don’t fit his game plan.
After leaving Bayer Leverkusen, Alonso returned to Madrid with the mission to lead the team to victory after the club failed to win any trophies under Carlo Ancelotti last season.
Speaking to ESPN on Thursday, Bale, who won five Champions League titles and three La Liga titles with Los Blancos is aske if he could get stars like Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior to work together as a solid team.
“I think given what he did at Leverkusen. Yes and now he has better players to work with and I imagine more transfer funds,” he said.
“So I think Xavi has the respect of the players and the players will play for him. So I expect big changes and I expect them to play the way he wants and if they don’t. I don’t think Xavi will be afraid to let anyone go.”
Bale also spoke about Mbappe. Who has been heavily criticise as the team’s star man. “It’s been a difficult year because he’s still scoring goals, he’s still doing well. But they haven’t won anything this season.”
“I think at Real Madrid you are expected to win everything. So it’s difficult because he still performs well on the pitch, but maybe he doesn’t have that moment.”
“So I think now it’s Xavi’s job to find the right mix between pressing. Trying to get the best out of himself and saving energy when you need it. Yes, it’s a difficult moment. I don’t want to criticise him and say he had a bad season because of the goals and everything.”
“But yes, with his name, what you expect him to do, of course, everyone always expects more.”
